JuJoBee Cafe, offering Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches and an organic juice bar, has opened its doors. Launched July 27, it’s at 3236 Ginger Creek Drive, in a strip mall next to Le Peep restaurant. The owner is Tuyen Nguyen.
“We’re aiming for healthy, fresh food,” she said.
Among the smoothies are peach-mango, watermelon-lychee and blueberry-banana. There are shots of juiced wheat grass, broccoli, kale and spinach. The organic juice bar offers drinks — called Burst of Energy, Cardio and others — that feature ingredients like beet root, apples, celery, ginger and spinach. There are drinks with tapioca pearls and fresh orange juice, apple juice and cucumber juice.
“Bahn mi” is Vietnamese for “bread,” and the sandwiches — street food in Vietnam — are made with a Vietnamese baguette. They feature a variety of meats and pickled vegetables, such as carrots, daikon radish and cilantro. Like all Vietnamese food, the sandwiches have a balance of color, flavor and texture.
Nguyen said the most popular, so far, is the Saigon Special, a blend of pork meatloaf, grilled pork patty and pickled vegetables on a baguette, spread with flavored mayonnaise and pate. The vegan bahn mi has pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro, cucumber, tomato and soy sauce. The breakfast bahn mi has scrambled eggs and soy sauce. The bread is made fresh every day.
Meat is often a part of the Vietnamese breakfast, and a bakery case offers pastries made with meat. The Sea Shell is a ham patty and sweet mango wrapped in pastry, and the Flowering has meatloaf or hot dog wrapped in pastry.
The name of the restaurant comes from the word “jujube,” which is a small round fruit sometimes called a Chinese date or red date.
“We wanted to make it catchy and put a twist on it,” Nguyen said.
There is indoor seating and takeout. Hours are subject to change, but now are roughly 9 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Phone: 546-4199.
